Pisum sativum L., Chicharo Verejon (PI 312199) Improvement Status: Landrace. Collected from a market in Pénjamo, Guanajuato, Mexico. Seed was purchased from The Buffalo Seed Company who acquired it from the Western Regional Plant Induction Station. Shoutout to them for getting it started growing out in Kansas soil, and then making it available to me!

My Notes

Landrace: A variety of open-pollinated seed that is typically both heirloom and bound by a specific area. “Landraces and heirlooms are generally not nationally listed varieties which means they cannot be bought on the open seed market” (1). Culinary findings - excellent snow pea, with snap pea potential at the beginning of seed fill stage; grain pea culinary usage still untested! As mentioned in USDA notes, it’s in the top 22% of genetics for higher protein content. It’s VERY tolerant of heat and the string doesn’t seem to get in the way of whole eating until three weeks after seed fill begins (2 week peak harvest window). They were delicious shelled before the seeds began to harden.

USDA Notes

Ranks in the top 22% of peas in protein amongst the 1,352 variety sample by USDA ARS. Average plant height is about 4.5 ft so it’s a trellising type for sure. White flowers, average 7 nodes with pods from the main stem/two pods per node. It shows resistance to Race 1 of Fusarium Wilt and resistance to Fusarium Root Rot caused by Fusarium solani f. sp. pisi. 100 seeds weigh 16.4 grams, and takes 65 days to flower
