Centili “Pozolero Rojo” is considered a Pre-Columbian Exotic corn with the race being Harinoso de Ocho, specifically of the sub-race Elotes Occidentales. Harinoso means “floury” and “Ocho” refers to this race’s typical eight rows of cantle per ear. Pre-Columbian Exotic races of corn are thought to have been introduced into Mexico from Central and South America in prehistoric times. All four corn varieties in this group have South American counterparts. Elotes Occidentales are known in Mexico to be great as roasting ears.

Centli Pozolero Rojo was grown out in the 2021 season. Seed was obtained from a bulk bin at a market in Topeka, Kansas (origin unknown). This variety grew in to around 14 feet, touching the sky and enduring a massive wind storm. During the storm, the planting became a shelter for deer who nestled into and hollowed out the center of the planting to take refuge. These flattened stalks recovered in part, growing parallel to the ground for four to six feet and then immediately upwards at a 90 degree angle for an additional 5-6 feet. Production was largely reduced, but a Kansas-grown seed crop remains.

Typical distribution of this corn is in the Jaliscan Plateau at 1200-1600 m elevation, though also found in costal elevations down to 0. Guanajuato distribution has also been recorded by E. Hernandez X., Et al. (1952) just north of Léon.
